Supporting our Planet with Sustainable Death Care
The typical “death care” practices of Mausoleums, caskets and burial are costly both financially and environmentally. We here at Environmental Sustainability of Costa Rica are committed to supporting our planet and community by offering and educating on numerous ecologically green and sustainable ways of living, from the demonstration organic farm and nature preserve to this novel bio-sanctuary crematory remains natural interment program. With the ideas of life affirming, planet supporting, ecological and economical being an essential part of our organizational operations, the offering of this service brings us joy, as it touches all those aspects while also expanding the rain forest and its air purifying actions.

According to the Green Burial Council, in just one year the USA alone uses 77,000 trees ( 20 million board feet) for caskets, 1.6 million tons of reinforced concrete for vaults and 4.3 million gallons of toxic embalming fluid containing the carcinogen formaldehyde. This does not even include the degradation of wild and forested lands to create the expansive green areas for these burials, or the huge quantities of fresh water used to maintain them. This data makes it clear that this is not a sustainable, earth supporting practice.

If you choose to, you are invited to visit the rain forest farm and plant the tree yourself, setting it exactly where you want to be and putting your intentions, prayers and good thoughts into the tree as it transitions from a planting container to a free and full soil environment. All our trees are either grown organically from seeds and cuttings on our farm, or locally sourced. We have a wide variety of tree species to choose from, all of which offer food and shelter spaces to the large wildlife population of birds, monkeys, sloths, butterflies and more that make their home in our rain forest preserve. This way your last earthly remains will most directly and literally be supporting the rain forest and its residents in its transforming functions.

Each burial gets a tile placed on the tree with a scannable QR code that leads to the web space. These tiles can also be placed into wind chimes, to have the songs of the wind spread the blessings of your loved one on the winds. This technology allows your friends and family from all over the world to visit with and share in the celebration of life for the departed souls.

Our variety of options for burial at the base of trees holds appeal for everyone. We have three areas of primary rain forest available for use, each with unique offerings and beautiful surroundings. To further support the purification of the planets air and expand the forest we offer planting of a young tree now, and it will be growing and cleansing the air while you are alive breathing that same air. It will be ready when you are to lovingly receive your ashes, as a fertilizer for its continued growth. We can also place your or your beloveds remains at the base of an existing tree, contributing to its health and growth as it continues to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen for the benefit of all of creation. You are invited to come to the farm bio-sanctuary and participate in the burial of the ashes; we also have experienced staff to offer a wide variety of life affirming ceremonies at the time of interment. If you can not come, you can ship the ashes to us and we will take care of the rest. If you choose a ceremony, our staff can film the ceremony and burial for you and place it on the private web site whether you are attend or not.
At Earth’s Embrace we offer the place the crematory remains in natural organic urns, grown on our farm — colorful Cacao pods and tree grown gourds. This practice of replacing other industrially created products with natural , locally sourced products reduces costs and contributes to sustainability. We also offer direct burial of the ashes in a pH balanced form.

So you can see, choosing Earth’s Embrace as your eternal resting place supports you, your friends and family, and the Earth as a living bio-sphere. Choosing to rest your remains on the land bridge between two continents, reflects the space between the two worlds — the web space where your loved ones can share just magnifies this. In this modern age we are not limited by local, the Earth is one, and choosing to share your final remains with the Earth by supporting the rain forest is both economical, ecological and a life affirming choice.
